 6 Inch Parliament Hinges

When standard butt hinges will not provide the clearance your door needs, our 6 inch parliament hinges offer the professional solution. These specialized projection hinges feature an extended knuckle that moves the door away from the frame. This allows it to open a full 180 degrees and clear deep architraves, skirting boards, window boards, and even external downpipes.

Whether you are installing French doors, bifold doors, or space-saving internal doors, these 6-inch hinges deliver robust performance and lasting durability. The 6-inch size is ideal for larger doors and applications requiring substantial projection.

What Are Parliament Hinges?

Parliament hinges are a specialized type of butt hinge with an elongated knuckle that projects the door away from the frame. Unlike standard hinges where the pivot point sits close to the frame, parliament hinges relocate this pivot point forward. This creates the necessary clearance for doors to swing past obstructions.

When fitted, the extended knuckle pushes the door away from the frame. The screw holes are positioned toward the edge of the hinge flap. The projection provided, often up to 4 inches, allows the door to fold back flat against the wall.

This makes them indispensable for French doors and double doors, allowing both doors to open fully without interference. They are ideal for bifold doors, enabling complete folding action.

They work perfectly for under-stair cupboards, maximizing access to confined spaces. They clear deep decorative moldings on doors with thick architraves. For external doors, they bypass downpipes and other exterior obstructions.

Premium Material Options

Our solid brass parliament hinges offer natural corrosion resistance and timeless elegance. They are available in multiple finishes including polished brass which is lacquered to maintain shine and ideal for traditional settings. Satin nickel offers a modern, muted sheen that resists fingerprints. Silver is a classic, versatile finish for various applications.

Brass hinges are sturdy in construction and provide excellent support for doors and windows. They feature good grip strength and are suitable for both domestic and commercial environments.

For maximum durability and corrosion resistance, choose our stainless steel parliament hinges. Options include polished stainless steel for a bright, contemporary finish. Satin stainless steel offers low-luster, easy maintenance. Black stainless steel features a durable oven-baked finish with subtle sheen.

The stainless steel base material provides excellent protection against rusting and oxidization. These hinges are perfect for external applications and high-humidity environments.

Our black-finished steel hinges are baked in a high-temperature oven during manufacturing. This gives them durable, corrosion-resistant qualities. This makes them a popular choice in traditional settings where their subtle sheen offers a bold contrast on stained and painted timber alike.

Ball Bearing Technology

Many of our 6-inch parliament hinges feature precision ball bearings in the knuckle. This advanced design provides extra strength as ball bearings distribute load evenly for heavy-duty applications. It provides smooth action with effortless, quiet operation that will last for many years.

It reduces wear by minimizing friction between moving parts. It extends lifespan, ensuring reliable performance for decades.

Understanding Hinge Dimensions

Parliament hinges are typically described by three measurements.

The leaf height is 4 inches or 102mm. This is the vertical size of the hinge leaf. The overall width when fully open is 6 inches or 152mm. This is the total width when the hinge is fully open.

The projection is 4 inches or 100mm. This is how far the door stands away from the frame. The thickness ranges from 3 to 5mm. Material thickness varies by model.

An example specification is 102mm by 100mm by 152mm. This means 102mm leaf height, 100mm projection, and 152mm fully open width.

Load Capacity and Hinge Spacing

For optimal performance and safety, use 2 hinges per door leaf for standard doors. For heavy doors, a pair and a half of 3 hinges can be fitted to provide extra strength. For extra-heavy doors, consult manufacturer guidelines for specific weight ratings.

Proper hinge spacing is essential for correct door operation. Standard practice with hinges spaced as shown in manufacturer guidelines provides maximum resistance to warping.

Where overhead door closers are used, additional lateral forces are applied to the top hinge. It is recommended that hinges are spaced to reduce lateral force.

Where door width exceeds 1000mm or door mass exceeds that allowed for 3 hinges, additional hinges can be fitted.

Installation Guide

Proper preparation ensures your hinges will operate correctly for years.

Step one is to check alignment. It is essential that the door frame is vertically and horizontally plumb, especially the hinge side. The pivot point of all hinges requires to be the same for correct operation. Misalignment can compromise the integrity of the hinge and other hardware components.

Step two is to mark hinge positions. At the determined spacing, position the hinge leaf on the door so that the edge of the leaf by the knuckle is flush with the edge of the door. Mark around the leaf. Repeat at each hinge position.

Step three is to cut mortices. Mortice out the door to equal the thickness of the hinge leaf. The mortice should be smooth and any shavings or swarf must be removed. If intumescent pads are being fitted behind the hinge leaf, ensure to increase the mortice depth accordingly.

Step four is to attach hinges to door. Position the leaf into the mortice, mark the fixing holes, and pilot drill to suit the fixing screws. Secure the hinge leaf to the door using the screws provided and repeat for other hinges.

Step five is to position door in frame. Offer the door up to the door frame. Pack under the door leaf to achieve the required clearance. Once in the required position, open the top hinge leaf flat against the frame and mark around the hinge leaf as with the door. Repeat at each hinge position.

Step six is to attach to frame. Mortice out the frame to equal the thickness of the hinge leaf as was done on the door. Position the leaf into the mortice, pilot drill the fixing holes, and secure with screws provided. Repeat for remaining hinges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between standard butt hinges and parliament hinges?

Standard butt hinges keep the door close to the frame, limiting opening to about 90 to 110 degrees. Parliament hinges feature an extended knuckle that projects the door away from the frame. This allows up to 180-degree opening and clearance of architraves, skirting, and other obstructions.

How much projection will 6-inch parliament hinges provide?

These hinges typically provide up to 4 inches or 100mm of projection from the frame. This allows doors to clear deep architraves and other obstructions.

Can these hinges be used on external doors?

Yes, depending on the material. Stainless steel hinges offer excellent corrosion resistance for external use. Polished brass hinges are suitable for both interior and exterior doors but may require additional protection in harsh coastal environments.

Do these hinges come with screws?

Yes, all our parliament hinges are supplied as pairs with matching wood screws included for immediate installation.

What does pair and a half mean?

A pair and a half means three hinges. This configuration is recommended for heavier doors where two hinges might be insufficient. It provides extra strength and distributes weight more evenly.

Are these hinges suitable for windows as well as doors?

Yes, parliament hinges are useful for both windows and doors, allowing them to lie flat when opened.

How thick are these hinges?

Thickness varies by model, typically ranging from 3mm to 5mm. Some heavy-duty versions may be up to 10mm thick.
